You tapped Encryption in the engineering menu, calculated a password and the car refused it. The calculator doesn’t make mistakes on correct input, so one of these is almost always the reason.

Cause 1: The wrong version tab

The password window shows Version 1.0, Version 2.0 or Version 3.0, and each version uses a different formula. Pick the calculator tab that matches exactly what your car shows.

Cause 2: The wrong numbers

VersionWhat to type
Version 1.0Only the last 7 digits of the productID, not the whole number
Version 2.0The 6-digit productID and the 4-digit ranNum
Version 3.0All 17 characters of the VIN and the 4-digit RAND

For the VIN, mind look-alike characters: VINs never use the letters I, O or Q, so a round character is the digit 0 and a straight one is the digit 1.

Cause 3: The random number changed

The ranNum or RAND in the window can change when the window is opened again. If you closed it after reading the numbers, read the new ones and calculate again.

Cause 4: The wrong thing typed into the car

Enter only the 6-character result from the calculator. Don’t type the productID or the VIN into the car’s password field.

The calculator and the full steps are in the ADB guide.

Still refused?

  1. Close the password window and tap Encryption again.
  2. Read the version and the numbers it shows now.
  3. Calculate in the matching tab and type the new result straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse the password next time?

Not necessarily. With Version 2.0 and 3.0 the random number in the window can change, so calculate again from what the window shows each time.

Is the password the same for every car?

No. It is calculated from your car's own numbers - the productID, the VIN or the random number in the window - so a password from another car won't work.
