The screen in the Jaecoo J7 and Omoda C5 is an Android computer: an automotive build of Android made for the car. It runs the car’s own apps (media, settings, climate, navigation), but it ships without the Google Play Store and without Google Play Services.

See the exact version on your car

  1. Enable ADB in the engineering menu.
  2. Connect the car on the installer page. The connected car card shows the model, serial and Android version.

Or check it in JaecooApp

Once JaecooApp is installed, open System → Cockpit Preferences & About. Operating System shows the Android version with its API level, Cockpit Device the head unit’s maker and model, and Product ID its serial number.

What the missing Google services change

  • Google sign-in for YouTube, YouTube Music and Google Maps goes through MicroG (sign-in problems).
  • Google Play apps install through JaecooApp’s Online store. Paid apps and apps with expansion (OBB) files aren’t supported, and a few apps report that they are not compatible with this device.
  • Apps that don’t need Google install like on any Android device.

Is it rooted? Do I need root?

No and no. Apps are installed over ADB, a switch in the car’s engineering menu. See Do you need to root the Jaecoo J7?

Frequently asked questions

Is it Android Auto?

No. Android Auto projects apps from your phone. The head unit runs Android itself, so apps can be installed directly on the car.

Why can't I just download apps?

The head unit ships without the Google Play Store and Google Play Services, and without a way to install other apps from its own menus.

Can JaecooApp update the car's Android version?

No. JaecooApp doesn't change the car's system. The Android version only changes with the car's own software updates.

Can I install paid apps from Google Play?

Not through JaecooApp's Online store. It installs free apps; paid apps and apps with expansion (OBB) files aren't supported.
